Mentors and Learning to Lead

I came across this blog posting that I thought was very interesting about lessons that can be learned from Anti-Mentors, check it out and then come back to read the rest of this posting. Go to: http://www.zoomstart.com/what-mentors-cant-teach-you-antimentors-can/

Often times because of someones competency on the job, they are promoted to become leaders but because they lack leadership and people skills they at some point find themselves in difficult situations when it comes to dealing with people they are supposed to lead.

You’ll find great sales people who are promoted to sales manager only to be broken because they lack the ability to lead.

This is a fundamental flaw that a lot of leaders fall into, promoting people based on their ability to do a great job.

Chances are when you find someone with a natural ability to do a good job, they get a lot of pleasure doing it.

And when that pleasure is taken away and they are put in a position of leadership, their view of the job is often at their higher levelĀ  of competency which is far superior to what most others can do and no one ever lives up to their standards and then the battle begins.

This is a wide spread problem and I hope leaders can find a way to promote based on leadership abilities not superior job competency.

Here’s to Your LifetoSuccess,

John Clark

    Hi John,

While being able to do the job well (being in tune with it) is a great quality to have as a leader, you’re right, leadership IS a different skillset.

It’s a difficult balance to find.
